Komodo speedboat tours: fast 8-hour day trips vs. traditional slower boats

Why every one-day Komodo tour is now a speedboat
Ten years ago, one-day tours operated slow wooden pinisi boats. The transition to speedboats happened because time matters. the crossings that eat the day on a slow boat are the ones a speedboat cuts. If you have 8 or 10 hours for the whole day, losing three hours to travel time means fewer stops and shorter island visits.
All five one-day tours on this site are now speedboats. There is no "slow boat" one-day option any more. The 2D1N liveaboard is slower, but that’s a different product — you sleep on it and cover more islands over two days.
8 hours vs. 10 hours: what’s the difference?
Not as much as you might think. An 8-hour trip and a 10-hour trip both cover Padar, Komodo or Rinca, Pink Beach, and Manta Point. The 10-hour tours add a second reef stop — Kanawa Island, Taka Makassar, or a similar snorkel site. The 8-hour speedboat is the Ohana Komodo tour, rated 4.9 (highest on the site). The 10-hour tours are $83 and $93, with the $93 six-stop option rated 4.7 and most-booked (1,671 reviews).
Pick the 8-hour speedboat if you’re flying the same day or prefer not to spend a half-day on the boat. Pick the 10-hour tour if you want an extra reef stop and don’t mind the longer day.
Seasickness on a speedboat
Speed doesn’t make the boat rock more or less. Wave height and the sea state on the day do. All five one-day tours are on speedboats, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, you’ll feel it on any of them. Motion sickness tablets or patches taken before you board help. Eat a small breakfast, stay hydrated, and look at the horizon if you feel queasy.
The other Komodo speedboat tours
All three budget one-day options use speedboats:
Best valueKomodo Island: Komodo Dragons & Islands Day Tour
Most bookedFrom Labuan Bajo: Komodo Island Day Tour with Snorkeling
Highest ratedLabuan Bajo: Komodo National Park Full-Day Speedboat Tour
The dragons tour ($83) and six-stop tour ($93) are also speedboats; they cover the same ground in 10 hours, adding a second reef stop. The speedboat tour ($93, 4.9 stars) finishes fastest at 8 hours.
If you’re prone to seasickness, bring medication (tablets or patches from a pharmacy). Non-prescription motion sickness pills work well. Take them 30 minutes before the boat leaves.
Multi-day boats: slower and much longer
The only slower boat on this site is the 2D1N liveaboard ($180, 4.3 stars). It leaves Labuan Bajo in the afternoon, you sleep on board in a shared cabin, and you spend the next day island-hopping. It’s not faster; it’s longer, so you see more. Read is one day enough to compare.

Frequently asked questions
Is the speedboat tour faster than other one-day Komodo tours?
Slightly. The 8-hour speedboat tour covers the same main stops as the 10-hour tours but saves time in transit, so you spend less time traveling and more time on the islands. It adds a second snorkel stop. The practical difference: you’re in the boat less, back by late afternoon.
Will the speedboat rock in rough seas?
All boats rock in rough seas. Speed doesn’t change wave height. Bring motion sickness tablets if you’re prone to seasickness. Eat a small breakfast, stay hydrated, and look at the horizon if you feel queasy.
Can I take the speedboat with kids?
If they’re strong swimmers and comfortable in life jackets, yes. Snorkeling is central to the tour. Non-swimmers and babies under one aren’t suitable. Check the specific tour’s restrictions when you book.
Is the 8-hour speedboat better than the 10-hour tour?
It’s different, not better. The 8-hour speedboat is rated 4.9 (highest on site) and best if you have limited time. The 10-hour six-stop tour is most-booked (1,671 reviews) and best if you want an extra reef stop and don’t mind the longer day. Read the speedboat review and the six-stop review to decide.
