What the rules are
The park runs through the SiOra system, an online registration database. Every visitor is assigned a registration number before boarding. That registration is filed by your tour operator using your passport number, full name, nationality and contact details. You cannot walk to the ranger post and register yourself. You cannot negotiate a cash deal with a boat captain. The registration must come from a licensed operator already in the system.
Why the system changed
The 1,000-visitor-per-day cap requires pre-screening. Balai Taman Nasional Komodo (the park authority) cannot manage walk-in visitors and a cap at the same time. They switched to pre-registration so they can know how many visitors are booked each day, spread demand across the week, and close booking when capacity is hit. Incidentally, it also prevents the situation where budget travellers show up with no plan and find no boats available.
Options if you want to visit
Book a tour through GetYourGuide or contact a Labuan Bajo operator directly. The cheapest option is the $83 dragon tour. Tours run daily, and operators have SiOra access. The only risk is timing: book weeks ahead in July–August, or one night ahead in shoulder season when the park is not at capacity.
If you are stuck without a booking and trapped in Labuan Bajo, visit a local travel agency in town. They have connections to operators and may find same-day slots during low season. But do not count on it; the park can be full.
Komodo cannot be done solo, off-the-books, or at the last minute any more. That era ended 1 April 2026. Book your tour online at least the night before. It takes five minutes and you will be in the system within hours.

Can I visit Komodo without booking a tour?

Can I hire a private boat at the harbour?

Do I need to register myself?
No. The tour operator registers you. You provide your passport number and full name; the operator files it in SiOra. You do not have access to the SiOra portal. Your operator handles it.
How far ahead do I need to book?
